- RE: Biochar's Potential
It's great that biochar is so prominent, but it could be much more. The report says, "We limited the source of biochar production to crop residue that can be sustainably harvested." It also places biochar in the category of Ag. and Grasslands, so it looks to me like the study does not include wood-based biochar other than tree prunings from orchards. Since wood is the primary feedstock in the U.S., it appears the potential assigned to biochar in this report is too low.
The estimate also does not consider the myriad non-agricultural applications of biochar. In the book "Burn: Using Fire to Cool the Earth" – February 26, 2019 by Albert Bates and Kathleen Draper, the potential of biochar will be described as more than an agricultural soil amendment in ways that will surprise.
