  • RE: Commensal Bacteria may be active factor for health of skin

    To the editor,
    Authors, lead by R L Gallo(1), presented very interesting results about the interaction of active molecules produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis with normal and malignant skin cells. This research was designed to a very high standard. Results regarding different reactions among normal and melanoma cells in response to simple molecules produced by commensal bacteria look clear. UV lighting of model skin helps the authors present results more logically and visibley. Conclusions look concrete. Presented results should be interesting not only to oncologists and dermatologists. It has shown us once more the importance of interdisciplinary analysis of illness pathogenesis. Authors presented arguments of the new role for commensal skin bacteria in host defense. But the interaction between bacterial active molecules and immunity cells is well known. Unfortunately, the authors did not put special attention to these results in the discussion. In future models, it would be interesting to organize research of 6-HAP in “interaction triangle”: microbiome-proliferation-immunity. Maybe 6-HAP will be for skin cancer cells the same, as “penicillin” for bacteria.
