- Neanderthal-modern divergence c. 1 Ma?
Beautiful study! However, there might indeed have been "hitherto unexplained mechanisms (that) sped up dental evolution in early Neanderthals." Although Neanderthal and modern diets probably strongly overlapped, anatomical (comparative biology) and isotopic data suggest there might have been some shifts in diet and food processing (e.g. tools, fire) between them and us, which might have sped up dental evolutionary rates, google e.g. "coastal dispersal of Pleistocene Homo 2019 Verhaegen".
