- RE: sequence database
The global initiative on sharing all influenza data (GISAID) is a platform where scientists can rapidly share their new data from all influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2. There is no requirement that new sequences must be deposited in GISAID. However, since GISAID contains nearly all influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2 sequences, basic sequence analysis, new advances and other related information in one place, scientists can easily access all these information at once. This unique feature makes it different from other databases and have tremendously helped researchers to rapidly access the rich information about SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus sequences.

Why is there now so much insistence on placing sequence data in GISAID, a tool that is quite difficult to use, rathger than in GenBank, which is very easy to handle and that we have been using for close to 30 years?
