A harmonic voltage is applied to the gate electrodes in red, which modulates the tunneling of single electrons between the quantum dot and the leads. A capacitively coupled quantum point contact is used to monitor the charge state of the quantum dot (QD). (B) Time trace of the current in the quantum point contact, which switches between two distinct levels corresponding to having 0 or 1 electron on the quantum dot. The waiting time between electrons tunneling out of the quantum dot is denoted by τ.
