Guidelines for eLetters

Science Advances is committed to fostering open discussion about the research we publish and so publish comments as eLetters, which are posted online linked to the paper being commented upon. eLetters are evaluated by journal editors, may be edited for style and clarity, and are posted at the editors' discretion. Authors submitting an eLetter must provide full contact information (name, full affiliation, e-mail address).

As a guideline, eLetters should be no more than 1,000 words and claims should be supported by full references when appropriate (10 maximum). We will send letters with substantial technical commentary to the corresponding author of the original paper and allow them time to respond before posting. After editorial review and approval, we will post the eLetter and the response, similarly, after it is submitted; the editorial office will contact you with any concerns and/or when you submission is posted. We usually do not publish eLetters with substantial new data or findings in eLetters.

Science Advances eLetters are not citable publications; they are not given DOIs and are not indexed in search engines such as Medline.

We will not publish eLetters that include announcements for commercial products, promote the published or unpublished work of the writer, or include material that has previously been published in any form. We also will not publish material that is offensive, derogatory, obscene, infringing of any third party's rights, about personal medical issues, or contrary to local, national, and international laws and regulations.

Conflicts of Interest. If you have financial or professional affiliations that could be perceived as a conflict of interest in responding to the relevant Science Advances article, please describe those affiliations at the end of your submission. The information will be posted along with your eLetter.
